Walker Beacon School Parent Resources

PARENT SUPPORT & ADVISORY GROUPS

These monthly “open format” meetings, facilitated by a Walker Beacon School clinician, allow parents the opportunity to meet other parents, be part of the school community, obtain information and support and establish helpful connections. Some of the issues discussed in the past include:

  • How Walker Beacon can work with and for you and your adolescent
  • Creating realistic expectations, adjusting expectations, and holding onto hope
  • Setting limits with fragile and vulnerable adolescents
  • Adolescent Development: Issues of identity and autonomy
  • Social Issues: Dealing with free time after school, weekends and vacations
  • Dealing with ambivalence about taking medication
  • Cognitive Behavioral Strategies to use at home
  • Helping adolescents with depression and anxiety

WALKER BEACON SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL

The Parent Council is a small, active group of Walker Beacon parents who meet monthly with the Director to provide feedback, consultation and enhance parent involvement. The Parent Council is committed to developing systems to improve communication among parents and faculty, offer resources to new and current familiesm, and strengthen the connection between home and school.
